Exercise and Weight Control

Weight Control
Just about everybody seems to be interested in weight control. Some of us weigh just the right amount, others need to gain a few pounds. Most of us "battle the bulge" at some time in our life. Whatever our goals, we should understand and take advantage of the important role of exercise in keeping our weight under control.

Carrying around too much body fat is a major nuisance. Yet excess body fat is common in modern-day living. Few of today's occupations require vigorous physical activity, and much of our leisure time is spent in sedentary pursuits.

Recent estimates indicate that 34 million adults are considered obese (20 percent above desirable weight). Also, there has been an increase in body fat levels in children and youth over the past 20 years. After infancy and early childhood, the earlier the onset of obesity, the greater the likelihood of remaining obese.

Excess body fat has been linked to such health problems as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis and certain forms of cancer. Some evidence now exists showing that obesity has a negative effect on both health and longevity.

Exercise is associated with the loss of body fat in both obese and normal weight persons. A regular program of exercise is an important component of any plan to help individuals lose, gain or maintain their weight.

Benefits of Ayurveda

When alternative lifestyles and stressful schedules are talking points in the cosmopolitan circuits, Ayurveda, the art of ancient Indian healing cannot be far behind. The inability of modern allopathy to allay all sicknesses and diseases has made an increasing number of people turn to Ayurveda, which has a cornucopia of ancient secret cures for stubborn diseases. Along with yoga, Ayurveda is the new balm for fevered souls. It uses natural herbs and their oils to treat ailments and ensure a healthy life. Most of the centres for Ayurveda, called Ayurveda Shalas, are in Kerala on the South Coast. This is beach country as well, so bring along your sunscreens and hats. In fact many westerners have made Ayurvedic spas their annual treat, combining a relaxing holiday with cleansing for their bodies.

Streams of Yoga

Stream Yoga
There are a large numbers of methods of Yoga catering to the needs of different persons in society. They are broadly classified into four streams. Swami Vivekananda puts them as Work, Worship, Philosophy and Psychic control.

Karma Yoga, the path of work, involves doing action in a skilful way. In other words, it can be said as a way of enjoying work, doing it effortlessly. The success or failure should not be allowed to cause ripples in the mind.

Bhakti Yoga’ the path of worship is a systematic method of engaging the mind in the practice of divine love. This attitutde of love softens our emotions and tranquillises our mind.

Jnana Yoga, the path of philosophy, is a systematic way of tutoring the mind about the realities of life by contemplation. This will strip off the garb of Avidya (ignorance) from our mind and the mind goes to its natural state of rest.

Raja Yoga, the path of psychic control, is a systematic process of culturing the mind. It is based on the 8-limbed Yoga of Patanjali.

Yoga is a science as well as an art of healthy living. It is no way limited by race, age, sex, religion, caste, creed and any other boundaries and can be practiced by those who seek an education on better living and those who want to have a more meaningful life.

Hair Loss Solutions for Thyroid Patients

Your hair is a fairly exact barometer of your health. Hair cells are some of the fastest growing .when your body is under stress or in disaster, hair cells can shut down inOrder to redirect energy somewhere else, to places where it is needed. The types of physical situations that can cause hair loss include hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, a variety Of medications, surgery, and many medical surroundings, in particular, thyroid disease.

Hair loss is really somewhat common. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly half of all adults in the U.S. will experience reduction hair by age 40. But thyroid patients in particular may experience hair loss before and more quickly than usual.

Normally, hair grows about a half inch a month for about three years, and then it goes into a resting period. One in ten hairs are in a resting period at any one time, and after about three months a new hair pushes the old one out. When more hairs go into resting period, or the conversion process speeds up, the balance becomes disrupt, and hair loss occurs.

Hormonally induced hair loss takes place when an enzyme starts to convert the hormone testosterone on the scalp to its less useful edition, dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT then attacks the hair follicle, and shrinks it, even making it vanish completely. Hair becomes thinner and finer, and may stop growing entirely. This conversion of testosterone to DHT seems to be sped up in some patients with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, and may be the cause of hair loss that continues for thyroid patients, despite what is considered sufficient thyroid treatment.

Some people actually complain that rapid hair loss is the most horrible symptom of their thyroid problem - the thinning hair, large amounts of hair falling out in the shower or sink, often accompanied by changes in the hair's texture, making it dry, crude, or easily twisted. Interestingly, some people have actually written to tell me that their thyroid problem was initially "diagnose" by a hairdresser, who notice the change in their hair!

While thyroid disease frequently causes common hair loss from the hair on the head, a unique and typical symptom of hypothyroidism is loss of the hair on the outer edge of the eyebrows. General loss of body hair from areas other than the head can also be seen in thyroid disease.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is the use of water to revitalize, preserve, and restore health. Hydrotherapy treatments include saunas, steam baths, foot baths, sitz baths, and the appliance of cold and hot water compress.

Father Sebastian Kneipp, in 19th century Bavarian monk, is supposed to be the father of hydrotherapy. Kneipp believed that disease could be cured by using water to remove waste from the body. Hydrotherapy is popular in Europe and Asia, where people "take the waters"
At hot springs and mineral springs. In North America, it is often suggested as self-care by naturopathic doctors.

There is a physiological root to hydrotherapy. Cold is stimulating, and it causes superficial.

Blood vessels to constrict, shunting the blood to internal organs. Hot water is relaxing, causes blood vessels to enlarge, and removes wastes from body tissues. Alternating boiling can cold water also improves elimination, decreases irritation, and stimulates circulation.

Typical Hydrotherapy Treatment

Hydrotherapy treatments are often given at health spas or recommended as home self-care treatments. These are some types of hydrotherapy:

Sitz bath - There are 2 adjacent tubs of water, one hot and one cold. You sit in one tub with your feet in the other tub, and then alternate. Sitz baths are recommended for hemorrhoids, PMS and menstrual problems, cystitis, polyps.
Warm water baths - Soak in warm water for up to 30 minutes, depending on the condition. Epsom salts, mineral mud, aromatherapy oils, ginger, moor mud, and Dead Sea salts may be added.
Sauna - dehydrated heat
Compresses - Towels are soaked in hot and/or else cold water.
Wraps - Cold wet smooth talk sheets are used to cover the person lying down. The person is then covered with dry towels and then blankets. The body warms up in response and dries to wet sheets. This is used for colds, bronchitis, skin disorder, infection, and muscle pain.
Wet sock treatment - Used for sore throat, ear infection, headache, migraines, nasal Justify Fullcongestion, upper respiratory infection, coughs, bronchitis, and sinus infection.

Facial

Spa Facial
A facial cleans, exfoliates and promote the skin to advance clear, well-hydrated skin. A facial is the second most fashionable spa service after massage. It is sometimes called a "deep-cleansing facial" or "deep-pore cleansing" facial because of extort.

The Basic Steps of a Facial:
A facial begins with a systematic cleansing with cotton pads or sponge and a product chosen for your skin type (normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive, mature.)
Removal of blackheads or whiteheads if you want it and need it.
Facial massage using classic strokes like effleurage to both relax you and encourage your skin and facial power.
A facial mask targeted to your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, Nature.)
Application of toners and protecting creams.

A facial generally starts around $75 at a day spa in a smaller city. Prices will be higher at target spas and alternative and hotel spas. Special masks and serums also make the cost go higher.

How Often Should I Get A Facial?
It varies from person to person. Preferably, get a facial every four to six weeks because that's how long it takes the skin to revitalize. Try to have a facial at least four times a year.

Here are the daily habits you need to keep your skin beautiful:
  • Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and leafy green. Good nutrition is the basic structure block of healthy skin.
  • Throw away the soap and use quality goods that are right for your skin type.
  • Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days and in winter. Use a good-quality, high-SPF sunscreen. Sun scratch is the single most imperative cause of premature aging.
